Multidisciplinary Unit: Mathematicians
Student Handout

This project consists of four parts:

  1. Summary
  2. PowerPoint slide show
  3. PowerPoint presentation to the class
  4. Creative project

The summary is to be no more than one or two pages in length and needs to contain the information found on the attached outline.

One of the problems you may discover in regards to writing about a mathematician is that the terminology and concepts are often highly technical, and not easily accessible to nonspecialists.  Try to describe your mathematician’s contributions as well as you can, but don’t pretend to understand material that you do not understand (just so you know, you more than likely will find material that you don’t understand).  Be sure to list the resources after your summary.  If any of your products are plagiarized, you will receive a zero on that part of the unit.

The PowerPoint presentation will be due by a date predetermined by the class.  The presentations to the class will begin shortly thereafter.  Everybody should be ready to give his/her presentation at that time.

The creative project is a chance for you to show off.  I suggest that you choose something that you are good at and create something to represent your mathematician.  For example, if you enjoy painting, paint a picture that reflects the mathematician you are researching.  These projects will be displayed and anything inappropriate will receive a zero.  This part of the project has no boundary, the sky is the limit.  With in one week, you need to have an idea of what you are going to do for your project.  Then final project needs to be completed by an agreed upon time.

Each part of the unit is worth 50 points and will be graded using the attached rubrics.  Points can be lost.  How can you lose points?  There are several ways:

            Attendance

            Attitude

Participation in labs and group time

Attention and respect during others presentations

Where do the lost points come from?

Points lost will be subtracted from whatever part of the unit is currently being worked on.
