Executive Summary

This workshop is to assist K12 educators in strengthening their web skills and creating or updating their teacher webpage found on the K12 server.  Many instructors probably started the web page at a TTL academy or some other workshop.  The session is directed towards those with minimal skills in the FrontPage environment.   Participants are asked to be prepared to assist other participants with ideas and to bring materials they could include on their web site to make it more useful for their classes.

Problem Identification

In light of the state’s offering of TTL academies and various other workshops many K-12 teachers in South Dakota have a teacher web site.  However, few use the site effectively.  What many started in a class or workshop has not been touched since the session was completed.  Research supports the concept that computer skills are not retained if they are not used; therefore it is important to have continued reinforcement.  Thus, many teachers have forgotten what they learned in the training and are unable to update or complete the webpage they started.  Therefore, teachers need assistance with updating and maintaining their web pages.  Although this is only one solution to the problem, we recommend offering instruction to teachers in the area by having a workshop at an annual regional in-service.

Goal Analysis

  1. Recognition of the potential web sites can provide in the enhancement of teaching and learning.
  2. Increase the skill level for updating and maintaining web pages with the net result being an increase in the level of confidence to update and maintain pages.
  3. Create a network of support people to assist with future questions and problems.

Learner Analysis

The participants of the workshop will be K12 educators of all ages, from 22 on up.  Both male and female members will be present with various levels of education.  All participants should have a current teaching certificate from the state of South Dakota, although areas of certification will differ.  Participants will also have different levels of experience in the area of web pages, but the workshop will be aimed at the beginner.  Because the workshop is directed at the beginner, the only prerequisite is that the participant has experience using a computer.

With such a diverse group all learning styles will be present; however the workshop will focus on the visual and tactile. Participants will learn from seeing the process on handouts and then performing the task themselves on their own computer.  The teachers will be highly motivated to learn and use this information since they preregistered for the workshop.

Context Analysis

The workshop being offered will take place during a regional in-service and is only one of several workshops from which teachers have to choose.  Teachers from a number of different schools attend the annual in-service.  The workshop will last about 90 minutes and is held in a classroom/lab setting with 25-30 computers equipped with FrontPage.

Instructional Sequence

  1. About a week before the workshop, a letter (appendix A) will be sent to participants.  The letter will include the following items:
    • Reminder to know their login and password for access to the k12 server.
    • A web site where they can register for web space if they have not yet started a web.
    • List of possible materials they may want to bring with them.

  1. At the workshop participants will begin with introductions and a round table discussion on teacher web sites.  During this time we will discuss the following:
    • Advantages/disadvantages of teacher web sites.
    • What to include on a teacher web site.
    • Any topics that the participants may want to address.

  1. Look at examples of different teacher web sites on a projection screen.

  1. Access individual teacher sites.  Each participant will move to a computer and follow the directions to access their individual web site.

  1. Give time to work with the directions in the handouts.  This will be self directed time in which participants can ask questions and work on their pages.

  1. Wrap up.  Participants will come back together near the end of the workshop and share what they have accomplished.

Preinstructional Strategies

We will provide an introduction to explain the objectives of the workshop by holding a round table at the beginning of the workshop.  This workshop will focus on describing the benefits of achieving these objectives by helping teachers understand the impact that a well-created and updated web site can have on education.  We can show examples of exemplary teacher web sites as examples of the desired outcome.  We can provide a brief recall of basics the teachers have already learned to help them relate to the new learning.  The workshop will also be an opportunity for participants to get to know one another so at the conclusion of the workshop they will have someone (other than the instructor) to contact if they have questions of problems.

Instructional Strategies

  1. Given the handout, participant will be able to successfully open their web site no matter what version of FrontPage is available (Procedural – Application).  Although participants have a handout, we will walk through the steps of opening their web as a group.  This should reduce any problems that could arise if participants were doing it on their own, since there is no flexibility on what needs to be entered at certain steps of the procedure.

  1. When looking at FrontPage interface, participants will be able to identify most/all of the components seen (Fact-Recall).  As a group participants will acknowledge the familiar components in the Workspace, which are similar to other Office applications.  We will also recognize some of the differences and discuss their functions.  By doing this participants should be more comfortable in the FrontPage environment.

  1. Participants will be able to create files and folders and name them appropriately (Procedural – Application).  As a group we will be sure that each participant can find their default page and at the same time discuss any default folders.  We will walk through creating a new folder and naming it appropriately, so that any relevant pages that they create can be saved in that folder.  By doing this, teachers will navigate through their web pages more easily.

  1. Insert Hyperlinks, format fonts and backgrounds, insert images, and work with tables (Concept or Procedural – Application).  Participants will try doing these objectives on their own following the steps in the handout when necessary.  Because each individual will make decisions based on their personal preferences, working individually will allow time to be used more effectively.  This time will also allow teachers to make their own web site more useful.

  1. Given the handout, participants will be able to successfully save their files and folders to a desired location (Procedural – Application).  As they create and modify pages in their web site, teachers will also save their work.  Since the web sites they are working on are located on the state server, the handout will provide directions to save the files to this particular location.

  1. Given the handout, participants will be able to successfully publish their webs to desired locations (Concept – Application).  After about an hour of work time, participants will come together as a group and we will walk through the process of publishing their web to different locations such as a disk, a server other than the state, or even CD Rom.  This will allow them to backup their webs and move them.

Formative Evaluation

Considering the objectives and the audience for which they are intended, the level of learning is acceptable.  The one area of weakness is the amount of information to be covered in the time allowed.  Participants are able to perform most of the skills at an acceptable level; however some may struggle depending on their level of confidence in the area.  The instruction required about an hour.  The learning on the other hand will require countless hours that the participants will have to put in so that they can retain and build on the knowledge they acquired during the workshop.  Due to the nature of the workshop, outcome measurement through tests does not adequately assess the objectives.  The content that is covered may need to be revised due to so much information being covered in such a small amount of time and the different rate at which each participant learns.

Summative Evaluation

At the beginning and end of the workshop participants will be asked to complete a survey of their FrontPage skills and a questionnaire to assist in evaluating the workshop and supply feedback for future modifications.  The survey and questionnaire can be found in the instructional materials section.  Again because of the nature of the workshop, objectives tests will not be used as a form of evaluation.

Instructional Materials

Introduction to the Unit

The round table at the beginning of the workshop focuses on helping teachers understand the impact that a well created and updated web site can have on education. Topics that will be addressed during this time include:

    • Advantages/disadvantages of teacher web sites.
    • What to include on a teacher web site.
    • Any topics that the participants may want to address.

The round table is also an opportunity for participants to get to know one another so at the conclusion of the workshop they will have someone (other than the instructor) to contact if they have questions or problems.  Just before participants move to the computers, they will be asked to complete a survey of skills.  This will be compared to a post workshop survey they will complete at the conclusion of the session.

Appropriate Content

The content of the workshop will be found in the handout given to each individual.  As a group, participants will open their web page, familiarize themselves with the Workspace in FrontPage, and understand file management.  Once this is done we will transition to the next section by allowing participants to work on their individual web pages with the help of the handouts and individual assistance from the instructor or other participants.  Towards the end of the workshop we will transition again by bringing participants together and letting them share what they have accomplished.

Return to Table of Contents

Application Exercises

Each participant will be given a handout that will guide them through many of the basic procedures necessary in creating productive web pages.  By dividing activities into both group and individual, each learner will be able to reach the objectives of the workshop.

Return to Table of Contents

Conclusion

At the end of the workshop participants will be asked to share one thing that they accomplished during the workshop.  This will be one way to observe whether the goals of the workshop were achieved.  Also at this time participants will be asked to complete a post survey of their skills and a questionnaire to assist in the evaluation of the workshop.

Appendix A

Invitation Letter

Dear Mr./Mrs. XXXXX,

According to my records you are registered to participate in the FrontPage Workshop being held at the Regional Inservice.  I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in updating your teacher web site and at the same time provide you with some important and beneficial information.

First of all be sure that you have webspace.  If you aren’t sure if you have webspace on the state server do a search at: http://www.k12.sd.us/Web/Educators.asp .  If you do not have webspace, then you can request it at http://www.k12.sd.us/FAQ/view.asp?id=549 .  If you need to request webspace, be sure to do it at least three days before the workshop to allow time for setup.

Next you need to be sure that you know your k12 login and password.  It is the same as your state email.

Finally, be sure to bring any materials with you that will help in the updating of your web site.  I am not sure if a scanner will be available, so if you would like to put pictures on, please scan them to a disk before you arrive.  If you have digital photos from home or class that you would like to include that is fine, be sure to check your schools policy on pictures of students on the web.

One last request – I ask that you please bring ideas with you to share with other participants at the beginning of the workshop.  Hopefully together we can create web sites that enhance the teaching and learning environment.  If you have any questions feel free to contact me at the email address below.

Sincerely,
