Learning How to Teach Using
Interactive Videoconferencing
EDFN 590
Course Description: This course is designed to introduce the student to teaching using interactive videoconferencing. The student will examine the application of distance learning principles to educational settings using interactive video, computers and print. Distance learning theories and concepts will be applied to the learning process and the characteristics and needs of the learner.
Instructor: Denise Peterson
Semester Completed: Spring 1999
Goals/Objectives accomplished:
The time I spent in this class really made me aware of the trend of teaching using Interactive Videoconferencing and the many issues involved. I also learned how to manage the instructional and computer technology systems used. During the course I had to demonstrate the ability to teach and assess students in the Interactive Videoconferencing setting. Below you can read about some of the other activities we did in the class.
Project(s):
Unfortunately I do not have any of the projects from this class available to view, therefore I will explain some of the tasks we did during the course. One of the first assignments was to select one of the classes we taught and determine if it could be adapted to be taught over distance. We then had to write a paper explaining the class we selected and why, along with what would need to be done to make it appropriate for delivery over distance.
Another assignment we did was to redesign a lesson from a current class and do a 10 minutes presentation for our classmates using the equipment available in the distant classroom. Later we had to write papers on redesigning an activity and lesson to be presented over interactive videoconferencing.
We also spent a lot of time discussing different issues that arise in the distant classroom compared to the traditional classroom. Some of these issues included copyright laws, classroom management and discipline, scheduling conflicts between different schools, and sending and receiving tests and other homework.
