Using Excel to Create Climographs

 

Grade Level:  7-12

 

Geographic Theme:  Location, Place, and Region

 

Purpose:  To reinforce student understanding of how to create a climograph.

 

Objectives:  Students will…

1)      Use the Internet to find information.

2)    Be reminded of/introduced to the power of Excel.

3)    Use critical thinking skills.

 

Materials:  Computer with Internet access and Excel

                   Disk

                   Handout (attached)

 

Procedures: 

                   Previously students have learned about the different climate

regions as well as how to read and create climographs on

graph paper.

 

1)      Students will obtain the data needed from the web site

www.worldclimate.com

 

2)    Students will enter data into an Excel spreadsheet following the directions on the handout.  (Students need to be sure to set the ranges for the x and y-axis as indicated to make comparing the graphs easier.)

 

3)    After printing off the graph students will pair up and find their location on a map/globe and discuss what climate region the city is located and list factors that support their answer.

 

4)    Students will share their graphs with the rest of the class.
